Presentation Title:
A Student’s Perspective of the Incorporation of Community and Team-Based Learning to Increase Student Success
Abstract:
Community is at the forefront of all social interaction, creating a sense of belonging that forms important networks leading to the betterment of the collective. Therefore, promoting community in a learning environment creates a similar framework that pushes students to actively engage in learning and translate their knowledge from the classroom to interactions with fellow students and future coworkers. One strategy that utilizes active learning to improve recall and analysis is team-based learning (TBL) where students learn information then apply it through teaching one another. This specific means of teaching has been found to promote a more positive student outlook toward the classroom, leading to higher student engagement that also increases student satisfaction and long-term recall.
Part of the success of TBL is attributed to its ability to cater to students’ needs. From experience, community learning using TBL provides a safe space for students to ask questions and seek help by eliminating the fear of judgment that may be associated with approaching the instructor. Forming study groups that play to the strengths of each group member develop an environment where students with greater understanding of concepts can aid those with lesser while still benefitting from recalling and applying knowledge. Additionally, TBL addresses the development of soft skills such as professionalism and communication that benefit students in the long run. As education continues to shift toward a more inclusive environment, instructors can utilize a variety of these learning styles to suit the needs of their students in a dynamic learning environment.
