Presentation Title:
Efficiency of online-based flipped classrooms during the COVID-19 pandemic
Abstract:
Traditionally, students attend in-person classes to learn, and then apply the knowledge they retained towards their assignments. This traditional method of learning was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. When the pandemic hit, many instructors and students were forced to switch to an online teaching/learning environment. A lot of people are experiencing challenges due to various reasons, such as unfamiliarity of technology, distractions from their environment, procrastination and time management as well as refusal to participate in activities. When instructors began to notice the disconnect between them and their students, they started implementing different teaching strategies to get students to engage more virtually, and online flipped classrooms is one of them.
Online flipped classrooms, a blended learning strategy, is now an essential way of learning. With the integration of online flipped classroom modality, students view lecture recordings before their class meeting in order to facilitate more participation and collaboration during classroom time. Even though it takes more time and energy to prepare the materials for instructors, students do engage more with their peers virtually. The benefits of an online flipped classroom include: 1.) learning at their own pace, 2.) instructors having enough time to grade assignments, 3.) higher critical thinking skills during discussions, and 4.) increased confidence while participating in online classroom activities.
This presentation will introduce the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in higher education and elaborate on how online flipped classrooms encourage students and teachers to communicate with each other.
Learning Outcomes:
Through online flipped classroom modality, students can:
- Learn at their own pace,
- Develop higher critical thinking skills during discussions, and
- Increase their confidence while participating in online classroom activities.
