Clinical Neuropsychology956 (CN956) serves as the teaching and research affiliate of the clinical neuropsychology emphasis within the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) in Edinburg, Texas. Established by the Texas Legislature in 2013, UTRGV is recognized as the first major public university of the 21st century and was founded with a strategic mission to advance a bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate academic environment.

Aligned with this institutional vision, the Clinical Psychology doctoral program—launched with its inaugural cohort in 2019—is uniquely positioned within the Texas–Mexico borderlands, a region in which more than 70% of residents speak Spanish at home (U.S. Census Bureau, 2023). The program is distinguished by its innovative training model, which prepares doctoral students to deliver culturally and linguistically responsive services to historically underserved populations. While Spanish proficiency is not required for admission, the program fosters the development of competencies essential for effective practice in diverse communities. In Fall 2024, the program was granted accreditation on contingency by the American Psychological Association.

The doctoral program offers comprehensive training in clinical psychology, with clinical neuropsychology available as a competitive, advanced specialization beginning in the third or fourth year of study. Admission to the clinical neuropsychology practicum is highly selective and reserved for students who demonstrate advanced proficiency in psychological assessment. Dr. Gasquoine does not maintain a traditional laboratory structure; instead, he provides individualized mentorship and supervision for student-led research projects. Participation in such projects, however, does not constitute or guarantee acceptance into the clinical neuropsychology practicum.
