UTRGV Chess Team defeats rival Webster University to win President's Cup

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – April 8, 2019  –  The UTRGV Chess Team successfully has defended its title as national champions of the President’s Cup, during the Final Four of Collegiate Chess this weekend at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City.

The Vaqueros again defeated six-time champion Webster University, as well as UT Dallas and Harvard University.

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – APRIL 7, 2019 – The UTRGV Chess Team is still riding high from its first national championship win, and to keep the momentum going, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley held a celebration in their honor Friday, April 6.

UTRGV Chess team advance to defend national title

The UTRGV Chess Team, which was named the 2018 Chess College of the Year by the U.S. Chess Federation, will defend its title as national champions at the Presidents’ Cup in April in New York. The team participated Dec. 27-30 in San Francisco in the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championship, which determines the top four highest-ranking universities and advances them to the President’s Cup tournament, also known as the Final Four of College Chess. BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – JANUARY 16, 2018 – The UTRGV Chess Team, fresh off a successful tournament at the  Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championship, now will defend its title as  national champions at the Presidents’ Cup in April in New York.

UTRGV Chess Team wins Texas Collegiate Super Finals

The UTRGV Chess Team – 2018 national champions of the Final Four of Chess President’s Cup competition – are now state champions, as well, after beating out UT Dallas and Texas Tech University at the recent Texas Collegiate Super Finals, held Oct. 20-21 in Lubbock, Texas. BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – OCTOBER 24, 2018 – They’ve done it again.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley   Chess Teams  A and B took first and second places, respectively, at the recent   Texas Collegiate Super Finals , with the top three universities in the state competing Oct. 20-21 in Lubbock, Texas.

The UTRGV Chess Team – 2018 national champions of the Final Four of Chess President’s Cup competition – was victorious over UT Dallas and Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

U.S. Chess Federation names UTRGV ‘Chess College of the Year’ for 2018

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – JUNE 8, 2018 – The University at Texas Rio Grande Valley Chess Team is continuing its 2018 year of victories, this time being recognized by the  U.S. Chess Federation as the  Chess College of the Year.

“What an incredible honor it is to be named Chess College of the Year by the U.S. Chess Federation,” said Douglas Stoves, UTRGV associate dean for Student Rights and Responsibilities.

The UTRGV Chess Team defeats five-time champs Webster in 2018 President’s Cup

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – APRIL 1, 2018 – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Chess Team pulled off a stunning win over five-year reigning national champs Webster University this weekend in the annual President’s Cup, the Final Four of College Chess competition, at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City.

UTRGV beat Webster 7.5 to 7.0 after what FIDE arbiter Mike Hoffpauir called “the strongest Final Four in the history of this tournament.”
