Asian Studies Minor Degree Plan

Progression requirements for this program.

  • Students are advised to meet with the ASM coordinator for successful progression in the minor.

Specific graduation requirements for this program beyond university bachelor’s degree requirements.

  • Must earn a ‘C’ or higher in all courses that count toward the minor.

 

Minor Requirements - 18 hours

To complete the minor, students must take two language courses (6 credits), two content courses (6 credits), and two electives (6 credits) for a total of 18 credit hours.

Required - 12 hours

CHIN 1312 Beginning Chinese II
CHIN 2311 Intermediate Chinese I
CHIN 2313 Business Chinese
KORN 1311 Beginning Korean I
KORN 1312 Beginning Korean II
KORN 2311 Intermediate Korean I
FORL 3311 Special Topics in Foreign Language Studies

FORL 3311 may be repeated when the topic is different.

Content Courses - Choose 6 hours

ENGL 3375 Introduction to English as a Second Language
FILM 4308 Topics in International Film
HIST 3372 History of East Asia to 1800
HIST 3375 History of Modern Japan
HIST 3376 History of Modern China
HIST 3377 History of Modern Korea
HIST 3379 History of South Asia to 1947
HIST 3382 Asian American History, 1849 to 2001
PHIL 1306 Introduction to Asian Philosophy
PHIL 3355 Buddhism
PHIL 4300 Special Topics
POLS 3324 Asian Politics
POLS 3325 East Asian Democracies: Politics, Economics, & Culture
POLS 3335 US-China Relations
POLS 4324 Contemporary Chinese Politics

FILM 4308 may only be taken when the topic is Asian Cinema. PHIL 4300 may only be taken when the topic is Asian Philosophy.

Electives - Choose 6 hours

Choose from Language and Content Courses above not fulfilling requirements. Study Abroad courses in China, Japan, or Korea and with the approval of the coordinator, courses related to Asian Studies.
