Credit By Exam
UTRGV students are eligible to receive college credit through one of the following examinations: Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or College-Level Examination Program (CLEP).
Eligibility
- Must have taken an eligible exam: Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and/or College-Level Examination Program (CLEP).
- Official scores must be sent directly to UTRGV from the testing agency. Students can confirm if scores are received by checking the Prior Education and Testing menu option on their Student Profile in ASSIST.
- Test scores must meet the minimum required score for credit according to our institutional policies.
- Cannot have taken the equivalent course at UTRGV or another institution and have earned a passing grade (D or higher).
- Cannot claim the exam credit at another institution.
- Must have enrollment at UTRGV
NOTE: For students with no prior enrollment at UTRGV, the option to request credit becomes available after Census Day of their first term of enrollment.
Petitioning Credit
To initiate the petition process, students can schedule a meeting with an Academic Advisor to complete the Credit by Exam Petition form once official scores are on file.
Things to know about claiming credit by examination:
- The decision to accept these credits is not reversible.
- Earning a passing grade (D or better) or credit at any institution for courses claimed through Credit by Examination will result in the course claimed being considered a repeated course.
- Course credit granted through Credit by Examination is part of the student’s academic record, even if the course is repeated.
- All the credits requested will be added to the student’s academic record. Only 30 hours of credit by examination, regardless of the source (AP/IB/CLEP or other), can be used to satisfy degree requirements.
- If multiple exams result in the same course credit equivalency, the credit will only be given once.
- A grade of CR will be granted for any credit requested. Grades of CR are not calculated in the GPA.
- Credit by Examination may affect tuition rebate eligibility, financial aid grants, preparedness for other required courses, excess hour limits, eligibility for admission to professional/medical programs, etc.
