About Us

about us banner

The Students as Learners and Teachers at a Hispanic Serving Institution (SaLT HSI) initiative is a program that aims to build collaborative conversations between faculty members, staff, and students on teaching and learning in higher education and beyond. This initiative aims to contribute to the design of teaching and learning spaces in direct response to students’ experiences, knowledge, and insights. We aim to promote student success by encouraging reciprocal teaching and learning partnerships between students and faculty members from various academic disciplines. By collaborating with our students, the initiative aims to foster student agency of their learning, integrate teaching approaches that center student voices and experiences, and build a culture of openness to student feedback, reflection, and revision on teaching and learning across UTRGV and beyond.

Student partners participate in weekly reflective and collaborative activities as we review academic resources, videos, podcasts, and testimonials informed by themes related to student voices, experiences, and success, such as inclusivity and accessibility, relevance of curriculum, grading policy, representation, implicit bias, reciprocal feedback on teaching and learning. Conversations around these themes help us learn how to engage in meaningful, effective, and most importantly of all, empathetic feedback.
