Research Thrust 5

Cellular Imaging Using Persistent Luminescent ZnB'2O4 Spinel Nanoparticles

Objectives: To develop spinel NPs with long-persistent luminescence and high brightness, and to explore the in vivo biodistribution for bioimaging and bioanalysis.

Faculty: UTRGV: Yuanbing Mao (lead) and Robert Gilkerson; UMN: Uwe Kortshagen, Eray Aydil.

synthesis, TEM and HRTEM, XRD pattern, excitation and emission spectra, afterglow decay

Fig. 18. Cr: ZnGa2O4 NPs: (a) Synthesis (b) TEM and HRTEM images. (c) XRD pattern. (d) Excitation (black curve, at 696 nm) and emission (red curve, excitation at 254 nm) spectra dispersed in hexane. (e) Afterglow decay after irradiation with a 254 nm UV lamp (black curve). The grey curve shows the background. Inset shows time-dependent persistent luminescence spectra after the stoppage of the irradiation.
