Meet Pedro Gonzalez, a UTRGV Unsung Hero

Pedro Gonzalez, General Maintenance Foreman on the UTRGV Edinburg Campus, has been a driving force behind the scenes for nearly two decades. From overseeing maintenance crews to responding to service calls and ensuring repairs are done efficiently, Gonzalez plays a key role in keeping campus operations running smoothly.

Whether he’s coordinating repairs or helping students find their way across campus, Gonzalez approaches every task with dedication and heart. “There are so many memories,” he said, “but the one I like most is helping students find the building they’re looking for. I treat them like my own sons and daughters.”

With 19 years of service and a deep connection to the UTRGV community, Gonzalez embodies the spirit of teamwork and pride that keeps the university thriving.

 

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT UTRGV?
I’m in charge of all maintenance for Edinburg campus buildings and clinics. I oversee carpenters, masons, and painters, ensuring they have all the materials needed to complete repairs throughout campus.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED HERE?
I have worked here for 19 years.

DESCRIBE YOUR AVERAGE DAY:
My days vary, but they often include hanging pictures for the president at Rio Bank, responding to service calls, purchasing materials, and preparing estimates.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
Customer service—making sure the requestors are satisfied with the work we do for them.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MEMORY OR STORY ABOUT YOUR TIME HERE?
There are so many, but the one I like most is helping students find the building they’re looking for. I treat them like my own sons and daughters.

TELL US SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU:
I was a self-employed carpenter before working for UTRGV.
