Meet Maria Infante, a UTRGV Unsung Hero

Text by Amanda A. Taylor-Uchoa

Maria Infante, administrative assistant at UTRGV’s Coastal Studies Lab on South Padre Island, is the friendly face and steady hand that helps keep the CSL Museum and Aquarium running smoothly. Whether she’s welcoming guests, assisting faculty and staff, or answering calls and emails, Infante ensures every interaction reflects the warmth and hospitality of the university.

Having worked at the lab for over a decade, Infante said one of her favorite parts of the job is the unbeatable view. “You just can’t beat a beach view,” she said. “I never get tired of stepping out the front door and seeing the ocean.” With a strong team spirit and deep commitment to service, Infante plays an essential role in helping UTRGV shine at the coast.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT UTRGV?
As an administrative assistant, I’m usually the first person people see when they come to the CSL Museum and Aquarium. I’m here to help—whether that means answering questions, solving problems, or simply making sure visitors, faculty, staff, and students have a great experience, whether they connect with us by phone, email, or in person.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED HERE?
I’ve been here for 11 years! I started back in 2014 when the CSL was still part of UTPA, before it became part of UTRGV.

DESCRIBE YOUR AVERAGE DAY:
On a typical day, I greet visitors coming into the CSL Museum and Aquarium and help answer questions or phone calls from UTRGV faculty, staff, and students.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB? DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MEMORY OR STORY ABOUT YOUR TIME HERE?
My favorite part of the job is definitely the location—you just can’t beat a beach view. One of the things I never get tired of is stepping out the front door and seeing the ocean right there. It’s pretty amazing.

TELL US SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU:
I love spending quality time with my family whenever I can.

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UTRGV COMMUNITY?
I’m all about being a team player and always happy to help. I do whatever I can to support UTRGV and keep things running smoothly.
