Bill Watkins

Meet Bill Watkins, a UTRGV Unsung Hero

Text by Amanda A. Taylor-Uchoa

Bill Watkins, an academic advisor at UTRGV’s Edinburg Campus, has dedicated nearly 32 years to helping students navigate their academic journeys with clarity and confidence. Whether reviewing degree plans, answering tough questions, or simply offering reassurance, Watkins has been a steady, guiding presence for generations of students.

For Watkins, the best part of the job is seeing students find relief and pride when they realize graduation is within reach. “When students express relief from the uncertainty they brought with them, it makes my day,” he said. Reflecting on a career spent shaping futures, Watkins says the true reward lies in the connections he’s built and the success stories that continue long after students leave campus.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT UTRGV?
To provide options for students to make informed decisions regarding academic outcomes. Sharing course recommendations, explaining policies, and reviewing degree requirements help students navigate the system.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED HERE?
I started on Oct. 1, 1993, nearly 32 years ago. I began on the fifth floor of the Student Services Building. After 10 years, I moved to the University Center; after eight years, I relocated to Southwick Hall, then to Liberal Arts North, and finally to the International Trade and Technology Building, where I have been for the last five years.

DESCRIBE YOUR AVERAGE DAY:
It’s never the same because each session presents its unique characteristics, but reviewing academic records and degree progression for daily appointments is consistent. Listening to concerns and fielding questions is a big part of the role. Consulting with other departments as needed to deliver a positive outcome underscores that the university is a team.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
When students express relief from the uncertainty they brought with them, it makes my day. Seeing their degree audit cleared for graduation brings a sense of satisfaction. Being approached by former students who share what they accomplished after graduation is a real payoff.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MEMORY OR STORY ABOUT YOUR TIME HERE?
We had a presenter at one of our meetings who asked if anyone knew Bill Watkins. She didn’t know who I was and turned to me, asking if I had met him. I replied, “I know him,” and then added, “I’ve met him a few times.” She said he was helpful to the Admissions office, and I followed with, “He’s alright,” before joking, “Well, really, he’s a bit of a jerk.” Everyone laughed, and when she asked who I was, a colleague blurted out, “Rico Suave.”

TELL US SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU:
Other than making three holes-in-one in my life, I was the host of the Masterminds quiz show from 1988 to 1994 on KRGV-TV. It taught me to think on my feet and adapt to the unexpected.

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UTRGV COMMUNITY?
Rewarding. It’s a special bond we share, serving the great state of Texas and playing a role in shaping the future. It unites our UTRGV family and provides relevance to our lives.
