Meet Marisol Guerra, a UTRGV Unsung Hero

Text by Amanda A. Taylor-Uchoa

Marisol Guerra, senior administrative associate for the dean in the UTRGV School of Social Work on the Edinburg Campus, has worked for many departments throughout her 19-year career at UTRGV. From the UTRGV Library to the Graduate Office to her current position in Social Work, Guerra said, each experience has been wonderful.

Being able to meet so many people over the years and make lifelong connections
makes her relationship with the UTRGV community so strong.

“When I need help, I reach out to them - we are all a big family and are here to help each other,” she said.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT UTRGV?
I’m a Senior Administrative Associate for the dean in School of Social Work.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED HERE?
Nineteen years.

DESCRIBE YOUR AVERAGE DAY:
I schedule appointments for the dean, make travel arrangement for the dean and faculty, reimbursement, reconciliations in iTravel for Pcard holders and travelers. Plan and organize events as needed from conferences to pinning and hooding ceremonies. Organize campus visits for candidates from their travel to itinerary for the visit. There are times when I travel to both our Brownsville and Laredo offices.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
I love my job, from helping faculty, students and staff, to organizing events for SSW.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MEMORY, OR STORY, ABOUT YOUR TIME HERE?
Through my 19 years with the university, I have worked at the library, Graduate Office, College of Business in the Economy & Finance department, College of Education dean’s office, Provost’s Office, and School of Social Work. All my years and all the different offices have been wonderful to work at. There isn’t a favorite memory as all my years have been wonderful and I have worked with wonderful colleagues across campus.

TELL US SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU
I love spending time with my grandkids, and I love to read when I’m at home.

WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UTRGV COMMUNITY?
I have many contacts through the UTRGV community. Some have left, while others are still here. When I need help, I reach out to them. We are all a big family and are here to help each other.
