RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – The UTRGV School of Medicine is one step closer to obtaining full accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the national accrediting authority for the U.S. and Canada.
LCME informed the university Monday that the UTRGV School of Medicine has been granted provisional accreditation status, which signifies an important step for the School of Medicine and positions the school on a projected timeline to achieve full LCME accreditation within the next two years.
“I am pleased to share this great news about our School of Medicine’s continued efforts toward obtaining full accreditation, and I am thankful to our outgoing dean Dr. John Krouse for his leadership and for everyone involved in achieving this next milestone in the accreditation process,” said UTRGV President Guy Bailey. “We look forward to continuing this success when our new dean, Dr. Michael Hocker, joins us later this month.”
Preparations for full LCME accreditation have already begun. The full accreditation process includes an independent student analysis, an institutional self-study, and culminates with a three-day survey visit by a team of medical educators and practitioners appointed by the LCME Secretariat.

ABOUT UTRGV
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.
UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.
