Who We Are and What We Do
The Office of Legal Affairs is committed to providing accurate, thorough, and timely legal advice to support and advance UTRGV’s mission of promoting student success, research, creative works, health and well-being, community engagement, sustainable development, and commercialization of university discoveries. We seek to educate our clients regarding laws, regulations, and policies applicable to UTRGV’s operations, to solve problems and facilitate transactions and collaborations, and to provide advice and representation to help our clients fulfill their missions and meet their goals.
Our services include:
- Providing legal advice, counseling, and training to faculty and staff;
- Assisting in the development and interpretation of UTRGV policies and procedures;
- Drafting and reviewing contracts, agreements, or other legal documents;
- Providing legal advice regarding patient care, compliance, and medical staff matters;
- Providing advice on proposed collaborations with external entities;
- Helping to resolve disputes, claims, and litigation; and
- Securing and coordinating the services of The University of Texas System Office of General Counsel, the Texas Attorney General’s Office, or other outside legal counsel when necessary.
Communications between the Office of Legal Affairs and its clients generally are subject to the attorney-client privilege of confidentiality.
The Office of Legal Affairs cannot provide legal advice to employees, faculty, or students on personal legal matters, such as criminal matters, family or estate matters, or tax matters.
