UTRGV faculty member Kurt Martinez performs Feb. 22 in classical, flamenco guitar recital

EDINBURG, TEXAS – FEB. 18, 2016 – Dr. Kurt Martinez, internationally recognized guitarist and associate professor of music at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, will present a guitar recital on Monday, Feb. 22, featuring works for classical and flamenco guitar.

The public is invited to the performance, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the UTRGV Performing Arts Center on the Edinburg Campus. General admission is $5 per person.

Martinez has studied with some of the finest teachers in the world, including Javier Calderón, Angelo Gilardino and Juan Mercadal. His studies have taken him to Europe, where he attended the Corsi Internazionali di Chitarra in Muzzano, Italy. He also has studied flamenco guitar with distinguished guitarists in the cities of Madrid, Jerez de la Frontera, Granada and Córdoba, Spain. Martinez’s active performance schedule has included recitals at guitar festivals throughout the United States, Europe, Central and South America, and Mexico.

Martinez, who is also interim director for the UTRGV School of Music, earned his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also has degrees in guitar performance from Georgia State University and the University of Miami.
