EDINBURG, TEXAS—AUG. 26, 2016 — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley hosted The Texas Tribune and three of the Valley’s state legislators Friday for the news organization’s latest conversation series.

State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa (Dist. 20) and State Reps. Terry Canales (Dist. 40) and R.D. “Bobby” Guerra (Dist. 41) sat down with The Texas Tribune co-founder and CEO Evan Smith at the UTRGV Community Engagement and Student Success Building in Edinburg to discuss issues facing the Texas Legislature’s upcoming 85th Session, particularly education and health care, and how they will affect the Valley.

The legislators lauded the creation of UTRGV and its School of Medicine, saying they will create new jobs in the area, increase research spending and provide more access to health care in the Valley. They also called for more equitable funding for K-12 public school districts and higher education institutions.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas presented the event and Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas supported it. Additional support was provided by the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation. Other sponsors include AT&T, BP, PepsiCo, Walmart and Southwest Airlines.
