Disjoint NP-pairs and Structural Properties of Complete Sets

National Science Foundation

2012 – 2015

$ 52,795.00

Liyu Zhang

This project will investigate P-inseparable and complete NP-pairs, in particular whether they can be derived from a hypothesis that is weaker than any of the known ones, and whether existence of these NP-pairs have strong consequences that are unknown before. The proposed project also aims to address the remaining open questions regarding structural properties of complete sets especially those having major impact in complexity theory if settled.

Special Sound Detection Sensor

South Texas Technology Management

06/01/09 – 11/30/09

$ 16,300.00

Hansheng Lei

The objective of the project to build a prototype of special sound detection algorithm, which can be converted to a hardware sensor and applied in emergency phone system to enhance security.

Future Teachers, Researchers and Engineers: Improving Retention and Success Rate of STEM Graduate Program through a Career-Oriented Approach

U.S. Department of Education

10/01/09 – 09/30/16

$ 2,595,038.00

Liyu Zhang

Hansheng Lei, Taeil Yi, Lappoon Tang

This project aims to improve UTB/TSC’s computer science and math graduate programs as an effort to expand postbaccalaureate educational opportunities for Hispanic Americans. The project integrates a variety of proven best practices including online course development, student research, high-school outreach, summer internship program, and invited speaker series.

Integrating Synchronous and Asynchronous Components into Graduate Curriculum to Improve Learning Effectiveness and Better Serve Students with Time Constraints

U.S. Department of Education

09/01/09 – 08/31/12

$ 240,376.00

Hansheng Lei

Liyu Zhang, Cheng Chang Pan

This project aims to provide a hybrid model of education to cater to Hispanics students who may not be able to commit time on face-to-face instruction on a full time basis due to time constraints from work and families (among other reasons) where instructions in classes are implemented partly on a face-to-face model and partly on an online model.

MRI: Acquisition of Futuro: a Data Intensive and High Performance Computing Cluster for Integrated Research and Education

National Science Foundation

09/01/09 – 08/31/2013

$ 704,293.00

Hansheng Lei

Juan R Iglesias, Soma Mukherjee, Matthew Benacquista, Andres Figueroa

Lappoon Tang, Mahmoud Quweider, Liyu Zhang, Soumya Mohanty

The purpose of this project is acquiring Futuro, a computer cluster for high performance parallel computing. Futuro will enable computational science research projects and computer science education with impact in bioinformatics, data mining, pattern discovery, genetic data analysis, experimental astronomical physical, collaborative filtering, theory of computation, high dimensional visualization, and other computational areas. The project seeks to lay the foundation for a strong research and education integration centered on computer science in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
