Exhibit Work

For this project I have chosen to design a series of third-party video game controllers for the PC. However, what makes these controllers unique is that these are all created with aesthetics in mind. Meaning that they each have their own fun and unique style so no two controllers are the same. In making these controllers I didn’t want these to be simple controllers, I wanted them to act as an art piece that could be collected. These fun and quirky designs act as a throwback to the chaotic nature of the video game industry in the late 80s to early 2000s, unlike now. At the time the industry was very chaotic. Companies like Nintendo, Sony and Sega were all trying to one up each other in terms of product marketing and functionality but at the same time video games were a new thing so the designers for the consols and the games had no references to work from. The result was years of weird looking game controllers and consols that people love to poke fun at today. My vision is to recreate that experimental feel in my products and in my company name. for instance, my company name “What! Why? That’s their reaction I want my audience to have when they see this product design. These designs are meant to generate a visceral reaction of confusion and wonder. As if the product looks so strange that you can’t look away from it. With what? Why! I am free to be as strange with my work as I want. In the past all my artworks and designs I have created all seem to follow a cookie cutter formula and follow basic rules of design however In doing this project I want, in a way, break away from that status quo in terms of graphic design illustrations and other visual communication I want my project to look uniquely eye catching. I also want to be clear that nothing you see really has to have a meaning or make sense. I want my viewers to take in the absurdity of these designs and accept them for what they are.
