Designer Statement

Jorge Meza personal logoThis project was developed in response to the challenge of presenting hobby-based information—specifically Gunpla and Gundam model grades—in a way that is both clear and engaging for audiences who may not be familiar with the subject. Many beginners entering the Gunpla community struggle to understand the differences between the various model sizes and grades, which can make the hobby feel overwhelming or inaccessible. This issue connects directly to visual communication design, as well-organized diagrams, labeling, and hierarchy can simplify complex information and make it easier for audiences to understand. I chose this topic because I wanted to transform a niche interest into an educational experience that welcomes newcomers while still appealing to dedicated fans.

My design concept centers on creating a visually rich and educational infographic titled “Understanding Gunpla Sizes and Grades.” Through research on model kit categories and iterative design sketches, I developed a layout that highlights each grade—SD, HG/RG, MG, and PG—using clear descriptions, comparison visuals, and a cohesive aesthetic inspired by mechanical schematics. The design direction emphasizes clarity, accessibility, and visual hierarchy, supported by futuristic gradients, clean typography, and simplified illustrations that reflect the engineering-focused world of Gundam. The goal is to present detailed information in a way that is both visually appealing and easy for viewers to follow at a glance.

The intended audience for this project includes new builders, casual hobbyists, and anyone curious about the world of Gunpla. The infographic is designed to demystify the hobby by breaking down the differences between sizes, complexity, and build experience, helping viewers choose the kit that best fits their interest or skill level. This work aligns with my identity as a designer who values clarity, engagement, and accessible communication. It demonstrates my ability to take specialized content and translate it into a polished, informative, and visually dynamic piece that can educate, spark interest, and support a growing creative community.
