Designer Statement

personal logoThis project was developed in response to the declining innovation and lack of opportunities for newer filmmakers within the industry. Major film productions frequently rely on their safety net of older film properties and established brands. This gives entry-level filmmakers a struggle convincing established studios to distribute their new film or having to independently promote their work to reach an audience. As someone with an interest in the film production industry, I believe it’s essential to give a platform to amateur filmmakers experimenting with narrative structures and directing.

My design concept, Vertigo Festival, is dedicated to challenging the standard conventions in film making. This creative direction aligns with the theme “StrikeThrough,” which emphasizes disruption, innovation, and challenging convention. Elements of my advertising are used to invoke the theme, such as the crumpled paper texture, bringing an edge of messiness and disruption to the poster. The poster is designed as an invitation to those interested in challenging the status quo.

The intended audience for this project is aspiring filmmakers trying to create and experiment in the film industry. My hope is that those skeptical of their own ideas will allow themselves the comfort of letting their story be heard— no matter the way it’s told. It will also enable creatives to have a platform, one never offered in the first place. With this project, I’m working based on my principles of innovation and creativity. I want to push forward a message about challenging formulaic standards set by the film industry. My professional goals are to do work similar to this project, promoting and working within the film industry.
