Exhibit Work

For my senior exhibit project, I have chosen to focus on MOONLITE DRIVE IN. A small family-owned local drive in-that provides a playground, freshly made food, and a lovely 40ft by 40ft car lot able to hold 200 cars to watch the big screen at the far end of the area. I wanted to create branding for a drive-in theater as it always fascinated me. From the fact they used to provide full dining services, playgrounds for children who could not sit still, and they were one of the few things from the past that were brought back into relevance due to the covid-19 pandemic. Since people could not be within six feet of each other, movie theatres were considered hazardous. Slowly, local businesses and companies began to host movie nights in their parking lots for the community. A way to get out of the house without having to risk your own well-being.

On the surface, I wanted to stay out among my peers and wanted to use my cutesy cartoon illustration style to my advantage. Once I began to research more on Drive ins, turns out there was more than what I expected. These locations used to be more elaborate with their faculties. They had playgrounds for young kids to play in. The lot would have little hills to title the car up, so it was able to look up at the screen and decrease the chances of blocking the view for the car behind. There were dining options for those who did not want to make a mess in their car, but instead would sit down in the restaurant at the back of the lot. This new knowledge gave me the motivation and passion to really give it my all when it came to this drive-in project. I make sure my skills as a graphic designer and illustrator are shown through this project. By sticking to the older risograph printing style for the illustrations and using fonts that resemble those used in the 50s, Moonlite Drive In emulates that retro nostalgic atmosphere that will bring in families and movie lovers alike. Using this approach will make sure all ages and all types of people will feel right at home under the moonlight.
