UPDATE: New COVID-19 Vaccine Boosters Available
UT Health RGV is now offering booster doses of both the Pfizer-BioNTech (Pfizer) and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines to:
- Anyone aged 65+ (at least 6 months after second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or at least 2 months after initial dose of Johnson & Johnson)
- People aged 18+ with any underlying medical condition (at least 6 months after second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or at least 2 months after initial dose of Johnson & Johnson)
- All people aged 18+ who feel at increased risk for severe COVID-19 because of frequent institutional or occupational exposure (at least 6 months after second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or at least 2 months after initial dose of Johnson & Johnson)
- People aged 12+ who are moderate to severely immunocompromised* (at least 28 days — or 4 weeks — from second dose of either Pfizer or Moderna)
*The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendation of boosters for immunocompromised people only applies to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (i.e. Pfizer or Moderna) as the agency cites a current lack of data to sufficiently determine whether immunocompromised people who initially received the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine also have an improved antibody response following an additional dose of the same vaccine.
Mixing & Matching Boosters: It’s Your Choice
According to the CDC’s latest recommendations, eligible individuals may now "mix and match" or choose which vaccine (Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson) they receive as a booster dose. Please note that UT Health RGV is not currently administering the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. However, people aged 18+ who initially got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can get a booster dose of either Pfizer or Moderna at least two months after their initial shot.
