Virtual Senior Summer Workshops

College Admissions Essay Workshop:
Help! I Don't Know What to Write About!

 

SESSION IS FULL

The College Admissions Essay Workshops will focus on helping students develop strong admissions essays. This workshop is best suited for students who do not know what they would like to write about in their essay. During this session, students will work on developing content ideas for their college admissions essay. The session leader(s) will offer tips for appropriate and effective narratives and assist students in crafting a rhetorically effective plan for their text. Students can expect to end the session with at least one idea of a story or narrative they might include in their college admissions essay and a plan for continuing to develop and expand their idea.

During this session, students will compose their ideas into an early draft of an essay. The session leader(s) will offer tips about how to structure narratives and highlight important content to help form an impactful essay. Students can expect to end the session with an early draft or revised draft of their college admissions essay and a plan for continuing to revise their text.

What's it like to be in a College Writing Course?

During this session, students will experience a mini-lesson and activity on the concept of “good writing.” Through their participation and collaboration throughout the lecture and activity, students will get a sense of how college writing classrooms can work and what might be expected of students enrolled in a writing course.

Thinking Like a Scholar

This session delves into a key tenet of the university model: you’re a junior scholar joining the academic community. Academic papers, in which scholars report the results of their research and thinking to one another, are the lifeblood of the scholarly world, carrying useful ideas and information to all parts of the academic corpus. We’ll spend time internalizing what work you can invest yourself in now to heighten your chance for success in collegiate level coursework in your future.

Q & A Panel with UTRGV Instructors

UTRGV instructors will answer questions from students about what they can expect to encounter in a UTRGV classroom and how they can best prepare for their time in college. The instructors will offer advice on habits, skills, and other practices students can begin developing now in order to support their success in a college classroom.
