Traditions

Alma Mater

The UTRGV Alma Mater was created by alumni Roberto Garza in Fall 2018 and was played for the first time at the Spring 2019 commencement. Today, the alma mater is played at the end of athletic games, commencement ceremonies, and different signature events.

Commencement Bell Ringer

Bell Ringers are honors given to graduating students at each commencement ceremony. The students selected have been actively involved in student life initiatives, demonstrated academic excellence, and embody the Vaquero Honor Code.

Hand Signs

V’s Up! Show your UTRGV pride wherever you are by raising your hand or hands with all Vaqueros. Whether you're part of the HERD or you simply want to learn how to support our Vaqueros during athletic events — you can easily learn our hand sign!

Ring

The UTRGV ring serves as a symbol of accomplishment. The ring is a connection between the past and future graduates that have earned the right to carve their name in the Vaquero legacy. The official UTRGV ring design is a true testament to a ring design for students by students.
