2017 UTRGV-UTSA RISE Retreat
The UTRGV RISE joined with UTSA RISE to hold a two-day retreat for 24 UTRGV biology, chemistry, and psychology students in San Antonio, TX this April. Designed to motivate and educate students on how to navigate through the different stages of their academic and professional careers as scientists, guest speakers were invited from across the nation to share their experiences and guidance with RISE students on alternative careers and how to pave their own career path, how to use their knowledge to give back to their communities, how to play a role in science policy, and how to transition through the early steps of their careers. Invited speakers came from multiple universities including University of California Los Angeles, UT Austin, UT Health San Antonio, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Arizona State University, and Rice University’s Baker Institute and consisted of tenured faculty members, post doctoral fellows, medical residents, and graduate students. The event had a profound impact on both students and faculty in attendance. One student stated, “It was an amazing opportunity. It really gave us the opportunity of learning about the experiences that all the speakers went through to get to the point in their lives they are today.”
The Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) Program at UTRGV in Edinburg is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded to Drs. Robert Dearth (Biology) and Jason Parsons (Chemistry). The programs goal is to increase the number of UTRGV students that matriculate to and successfully complete a PhD. In addition to workshops and career development forums, the program provides multiple resources including financial support to conduct biomedical research or behavioral research in laboratories at UTRGV, present their research findings at national conferences, and conduct external summer research at another university. Since 2014, the UTRGV RISE program in Edinburg has supported 27 undergraduates, placed 9 students in top tier PhD programs, and 5 students in Masters Programs.
