For Faculty
About Us
Our mission is to support student academic experiences across the university. We work with you to ensure student success through experiential activities, such as undergraduate research and service learning.
What We Do
We facilitate collaborations between students and faculty to incorporate experiential learning activities such as:
- Undergraduate Research - an academic experience that enables students the opportunity to work with faculty members. They are exposed to the various aspects of academic research including, funding, preparation, and presentation.
- Service Learning - an academic experience that allows students the opportunity to put theory into practice by addressing a need in their community and reflecting on the outcome in conjunction with their coursework.
How We Do It
Throughout the year, we offer several opportunities for students and faculty to be involved in experiential learning on-campus.
Engaged Scholar Award for Research and Creative Works
We offer funding to support undergraduate student-lead projects in Research, Creative Works and Community Engagement through our Engaged Scholar and Artist Awards. These awards support engaged student learning across campus and offer faculty a chance to mentor students throughout the research and creative process. Read more about becoming an ESAA Mentor.
Engaged Scholar Symposium (ES2)
Once students have successfully completed their projects, they are able to showcase them at the Engaged Scholar Symposium. This showcase celebrates research, service learning, and creative works conducted by UTRGV students.
Service Learning Designated Course Support
Our office also supports service learning designated courses, which meet UTRGV's defined criteria in course design based on nationally recognized standards.
Once your course has been designated as service learning, our office will provide support, including access to the Service Learning Module within the Engagement Zone platform, classroom presentations, and support from our Ambassadors.
Engagement Zone connects students with community organizations that need volunteer services for their coursework with filtering mechanisms for finding the best match based on interest, date, and region. Faculty also have the ability to track progress in real-time and collect reflection assignments.
Other Resources
You provide students with an array of opportunities, but did you know that there are also many resources on campus designated specifically for faculty?
Here are a few resources you are able to tap into for your own professional development:
- The Power of Experiential Education, by Janet Eyler (AAC&U, 2009)
- High-Impact Educational Practices: What They Are, Who Has Access to Them, and Why They Matter, by George D. Kuh (AAC&U, 2008).
