Outdoor Adventures

Overview:
Responsible for directly supervising various UREC activities, including, but not limited to Sport Club competitions and practices, Outdoor Adventures programming, and open recreation.

Responsibility

Major Duties
  • Monitor and enforce climbing wall rules and policies.
  • Keep facility clean and organized.
  • Belay patrons safely and promote proper technique.
  • Know facility’s emergency action plan, and how to engage it.
  • Knowledge of basic and advanced climbing techniques.
  • Answer patron’s questions and follow up on requests.
  • Assist with the opening and closing the facility as needed.
  • Attend all scheduled meetings and in-services.
  • Work with private parties and reservations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current student or a student pre-registered for the upcoming long semester (fall/spring, min. 12 hrs).
  • Student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Current Adult, Child, and Infant CPR/AED and First Aid or must obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Must be able to pass belay certification test.
  • Solid decision making skills.
  • Have a high level of enthusiasm for working with and serving people.

Preferred

Kinesiology or health/wellness major; previous experience in a health and fitness environment.

Responsibility

Major Duties
  • Provide safe, fun and educational opportunities to the members of the University of Rio Grande Valley community. Answer patron’s questions and follow up on requests.
  • Assist UREC professional staff with the day-to-day operation of the outdoor trips program.
  • Providing participants with necessary information and skills, completing required paperwork, meeting professional standards in various skill areas and maintaining participant safety.
  • Complete and maintain checklists as they pertain to your shift.
  • Work on developing/improving outdoor skills and instruction (navigation, gear repair, survival skills, etc.)
  • Help promote trips.
  • Assist with logistics and trip planning.
  • Aid with preparation for pre-trip meetings.
  • Inspect and pack group gear.
  • Assist with conducting outdoor clinics, trips, and workshops
  • Clean and return gear.
  • Participate and assist in post-trip meetings and evaluations.
  • Know and enforce rules and regulations according to University Recreation Employee Manual Rules and Regulations.
  • Know trip specific emergency action plan and how to engage it.
  • Must attend all scheduled meetings and in-services.
  • Assist with climbing wall operations as needed
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the University Recreation staff.

Qualifications

  • Must be a current UTRGV student or a student pre-registered for the upcoming long semester.
  • Student must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Basic knowledge of outdoor recreation equipment.
  • Must be belay certified or have ability to pass belay test
  • Must have valid driver’s license and be able to pass UTRGV 15 passenger van training course
  • Solid decision-making skills.
  • A basic understanding of Leave No Trace (LNT) principals.
  • Have a high level of enthusiasm for working with and serving people.
  • Previous leadership experience.

Preferred

Previous backcountry experience.
