Mission
The Translation and Interpreting Office (T&iO) plays a key role in the presentation and operativeness of UTRGV as a bilingual institution, by providing service in the translation and publishing of all official documents in Spanish, as well as assistance to Colleges and Departments in the production of bilingual texts and interpreting services in select campus and community events.
Vision
The Translation and Interpreting Office will seek to emerge as a key player in UTRGV’s strategic goal of becoming a bilingual university in every language-related aspect, from translating and interpreting services to publishing endeavors and terminology/language planning. It also aims to be a reference hub for translation services within the UT System and to develop partnerships with the private sector, which will provide hands-on opportunities for UTRGV’s graduate and undergraduate students.
Our Philosophy
The Translation and Interpreting Office at UTRGV works under the sphere and philosophy of the B3 Institute (Bilingualism, Biculturalism and Biliteracy), providing translation and interpreting services throughout the institution, as well as for third parties associated to UTRGV.
Our goal is to overcome language barriers so that Spanish speakers can access institutional resources and documents, and we do so by following these principles, echoed from those of the American Translators Association [1]:
- Conveying meaning between people and cultures faithfully, accurately, and impartially.
- Holding in confidence all privileged and/or confidential information entrusted to us.
- Acting collegially by sharing knowledge and experience.
- Attempting in good faith to resolve potential disputes [about language use and adequacy] that could arise from our professional interactions.
