Welcome from the Chair

Dr. Samuel SnyderThese are exciting times for healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley. After decades of desiring and planning for a medical school in the Rio Grande Valley, the Texas Legislature funded the development of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine (UTRGV) which opened in 2016. A unique opportunity exists for surgeons to participate in shaping the local practice and the teaching of surgery for decades. The potential positive impact on the health and lives of the 1.3 million people in the Rio Grande Valley is unprecedented. It is an honor and a privilege to be on the ground floor of developing this noble enterprise and to make a lasting difference in what has historically been an underserved population. My mission is to lay the groundwork for surgical service delivered in a compassionate, efficient and thorough manner. By meeting surgical specialty needs across many disciplines, patients will no longer need to travel outside of the Valley for their specialized surgical care.

There is a clear need for upgraded surgical subspecialty services and education/training of medical students and surgical residents here. I have three primary goals for the UTRGV Department of Surgery:

1. The recruitment of highly trained, expert surgical specialists in each category, bringing state-of-the-art techniques to the delivery of healthcare. This has been initiated in the field of Endocrine Surgery and will continue across surgical disciplines.

2. Up-to-date and innovative surgical education for medical students and resident doctors-in-training. Working together with our community surgical partners, my hope is to inspire the surgical leaders of tomorrow, ideally keeping these trainees in the Rio Grande Valley to enhance surgical care.

3. Promotion of academic and clinical research in the diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases across multiple specialty lines, impacting surgical care in the locale, the country and worldwide.
