How to Apply

We are pleased that you are interested in applying to our program. Please remember that the program only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Information submitted outside of ERAS cannot be accepted. Residents are selected only through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Applicants must be eligible for licensure (training permit) in Texas, more information is available at the Texas Medical Board (TMB). Applicants will be selected on the basis of their suitability for psychiatric practice, fit with the program, previous academic and clinical performance, letters of recommendation and interview.

Interviews

Our interview season extends from October into January. Interviews are offered to appropriate applicants after review of the ERAS application and supporting materials. No paper applications will be accepted. The number of interview slots is limited, so please submit your application materials as early as possible. Interviews are 1 day with several candidates scheduled at a time.

Application Materials

Please use the following guidelines to complete your application:

  • Completed online ERAS application.
  • Dean's letter from your medical school.
  • Three letters of recommendation from physicians with whom you have worked closely with during your training.
  • A recent photograph.
  • Personal statement detailing your interest in psychiatry as your career specialty.
  • Reports of your USMLE scores or COMLEX scores for osteopathic students (requires a fee paid by student).
  • Medical school transcript.
  • ECFMG certificate, if relevant
  • Documentation that can live and work in the United States if not a citizen or permanent resident

We prefer individuals who have graduated from medical school within the past 5 years. For any applicant who graduated from medical school more than one year ago, we will want to know that you have been active in significant medical experiences in the intervening years and have kept current in your medical knowledge.
