How to Apply
We are happy you are interested in our program. The UTRGV Internal Medicine-VBMC Residency Program accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Information submitted outside of ERAS cannot be accepted.
- Our 2022 Interviews will be conducted 100% virtually
- Interviews will be conducted on selected Monday’s, Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Estimated Interview timeline will be from 7:45 am – 11:30 a.m.
Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
All applicants for the program must participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). We only accept applications from ERAS; sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). More information about NRMP and ERAS can be found at http://www.aamc.org.
Applicants must submit their complete application using the ERAS website.
- Hold an appropriate degree for educational training from a LCME accredited or AOA medical school in the United States or Canada
- Have a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) if a foreign medical degree is held
- Subject to security background checks before beginning residency training
- Comply with the UTRGV GME Resident Selection and Appointment Policy
Applications must include:
- Common application
- Medical school transcript
- USMLE scores
- Dean’s letter from your medical school
- 3 or 4 letters of recommendation
- Scholarly activity
Applications submitted by fax, email, US mail or any additional form will not be accepted.
Deadline and Available Positions
The application deadline is December 31. Interviews will be conducted during the months of October, November, and December, 2023. We offer ten (10) PGY 1 positions for the 2023 recruitment season.
Resident Selection
Competitive applicants will be invited for an interview at the UTRGV Internal Medicine-VBMC Residency Program in Harlingen, Texas. Interviews are held during the months of October, November, December, 2023 and January 2024. Candidates will be selected based on their application, medical school transcript, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, dean’s letter, and interview.
- Applicants must be eligible for licensure in the state of Texas.
- Applicants must pass security clearance.

International Medical Graduates
To be eligible to enter our program, you must meet the following requirements:
- Have a valid ECFMG Certificate
- A resident in our program must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee or asylee, who has been formally granted such status by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security of the U.S. Department of State
- Non-US IMG Applicants accepted
- MUST obtain a J-1 visa sponsored by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)
- Resident Selection and Appointment
- Applicants must be eligible for licensure in the state of Texas.
