Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is your application deadline?

We begin reviewing applications as soon as MSPEs are released and suggest submission as soon as possible.

Applications for PGY-1 positions are only accepted via ERAS only.

When do you start interviewing?

We start interviewing in November continue through January.

Are USMLE exam scores mandatory?

Non-U.S. medical school applicants must pass steps 1 and 2 (CK and CS) to be ECFMG certified.

USMLE exams are mandatory for consideration of interview and rank. DO candidates must have a passing USMLE step 1 and 2 CK to be considered.

Do you offer preliminary positions?

No, we currently do not offer any preliminary positions.

Do you hire outside of the NMRP match?

No.

Do you offer observerships or externships?

Our program does not offer observerships or externships to anyone who is not currently enrolled in an ACGME-accredited residency program.

Do you have a minimum USMLE score?

No, but we prefer scores above 210 on USMLE Steps 1 and 2. We expect that individuals will pass the exams in their first attempt.

How long can I be out of medical school and still apply for your program?

We do not have a medical school graduation year cutoff, but we prefer individuals who have graduated from medical school within the past 5 years.

Are there any special requirements for international medical grads (IMGs)?

We require IMGs to be ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) certified prior to beginning the program.

What types of visas do you sponsor?

J-1 only.

How many PGY-1 positions are available?

We have 12 positions available through the Match.

Do you accept applications from International Medical Graduates (IMG)?

Yes, we do accept applications from IMGs.

Do you participate in the couple’s match?

Yes.

Do you support the ABIM research pathway?

No.

How many clinical training sites are there?

We have one main training site which is the Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, where you will be spending most of the 3 years of your training. Additional sites for core rotations and electives include, South Heart Clinic, Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley, Texas Gastroenterology clinic, Texas Oncology, South Texas Kidney Specialists, Valley Arthritis Center and RGV Diabetes, Endocrinology & Ambulatory Center.
