The benefits detailed below apply to eligible residents for the 2018-2019 Academic Year and are subject to change each academic year. Please direct all questions to your Program Coordinator and/or Program Director.

Orientation Stipends

Incoming Residents will receive a $100 per day for estimated 10 days plus a $500 device allocation.

Educational Allowance

In addition to the basic salary, each resident is entitled to reimbursement for the purchase of medical books, journal subscriptions, CME conferences, UTRGV parking permit, small medical equipment or any other items necessary for the furtherance of their professional career. All residents receive a $500 a year allowance.

Travel Awards

Each resident that is presenting at a conference or meeting can be awarded up to $750 annually beginning in their PGY-2 year.


Each resident is eligible for reimbursement of their USMLE Step 3/COMLEX exam if taken and passed in their PGY-1 year or First Year at UTRGV.

Texas Physician-in-Training Permit (PIT)

Incoming residents will be reimbursed for their PIT License application fee.

Lab Coat and Scrubs

Residents are issued two lab coats and three sets of scrubs during their first year of training. One additional lab coat and set of scrubs will be given to each resident at the beginning of their second year.

Professional Membership Dues

Membership dues for all residents in the American College of Physicians, Society of Hospital Medicine, Texas Medical Association and Hidalgo or Cameron County Medical Society.


Resident will receive reimbursements for the following certifications, BLS and ACLS on an as needed basis.

Vacation and Sick Leave: ALL residents receive fifteen (15) days of paid vacation and twelve (12) days of sick leave per year. Vacation and sick days do not carry over from year to year.
