General Surgery Residency at Valley Baptist Medical Center
Program Director's Welcome
Thank you for inquiring about the UTRGV General Surgery Residency at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas. This five-year residency program was accredited in 2021 and will matriculate its first set of residents in July 2022. Residents will rotate at VBMC, our main training hospital, which was the first Level II trauma center in the Rio Grande Valley – with plans to become a Level I trauma center in the near future. The residency also offers external rotations at Methodist Specialty Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, and Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas.
We have a diverse core faculty including general surgery, trauma/critical care, burn surgery, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, advanced surgical endoscopy, surgical oncology, and endocrine surgery. The breadth of cases seen will make for a unique training experience including trauma, general surgery, along with advanced oncology cases. With the advent of the UTRGV School of Medicine, new specialists are being brought to the Rio Grande Valley, bringing cutting-edge treatments previously unavailable to the region. All of which will help foster a diverse and well-rounded learning environment for developing surgeons.
