How to Apply

All application information should be submitted to the Department of Surgery through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).  We participated in the ERAS supplement application

As per ACGME requirements, please be advised that the General Surgery Residency Program at UTRGV School of Medicine at Valley Baptist Medical Center (Harlingen, Texas) is a five-year program.

Your completed application will be reviewed and if selected for an interview, the residency program coordinator will contact you with a virtual interview date and time. Only a certain number of applicants will be interviewed during the months of October through January. You may apply for PGY-1 Categorical (2 positions). Medical school graduation date criteria are within 3 years of application submission, although recent graduates are preferred.

UTRGV participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

To apply for a resident position, applicants must submit the following through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS):

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal statement
  • Completed ERAS application
  • Official medical school transcript
  • Dean's letter from the medical school of graduation
  • Three current letters of recommendation (including Chair letter if possible)
  • Copy of ABSITE reports if residency/fellowship experience is available
  • Medical school diploma
  • Step I and Step II (USMLE: Clinical knowledge and clinical skills) passing score. Must have passed both Step I and Step II on the first attempt. COMLEX accepted.

At the discretion of the program, prior U.S. experience may be required. If you do have prior residency/fellowship experience, a letter from a current program director is required outlining the following: written verification of previous educational experiences and a summative competency-based performance evaluation of rotations completed, evaluations or various educational experiences, procedural/operative experience, and current standing.

Application deadline

To be considered, applications must be submitted through ERAS by Oct 15, to facilitate interviews which will take place between October through January.
