Dr. Upal Roy selected to participate in the prestigious Butler-Williams Scholars Program
Dr. Upal Roy, assistant professor at the UTRGV Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences and one of our RGV AD-RCMAR Scientist was selected to participate in the prestigious Butler-Williams Scholars Program for emerging researchers in 2021.
The program, an initiative of the NIH’s National Institute on Aging (NIA), provides a unique opportunity for early-career scientists to build a national network in the field of aging research; learn more about NIA science and its funding opportunities; and sharpen grant writing skills. The 2021 Butler-Williams Scholars program includes topics such as minority health, health disparities, and advancing health equity; biology and neuroscience of aging; Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias; behavioral and social science research; geriatrics and clinical gerontology; consultations on developing research interests; applying the NIA Health Disparities Framework; preparing and submitting research grant applications and mock scientific grant application reviews.
The basis for Dr. Roy’s selection as a Butler-Williams Scholar stems from his pilot research at the RGV AD-RCMAR, particularly his research into observing miRNA expression in the Hispanic population suffering from Type-2-Diabetes. His current pilot project aims to identify the onset of AD in individuals suffering from diabetes with the goal of providing a proper treatment strategy for these patients.
We congratulate Dr. Roy for this award, and we hope this program will open more opportunities for supporting the development of his career in minority aging research.
