Field of Education
As in many other service professions, field practicum experience is a requirement in social work education. It is a mandated component of social work programs accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and is considered the signature pedagogy of these programs. Field practicum, field education, and social work internship are different terms used for the same concept: the integration of knowledge, professional values and principles, and skills applied in the real world with real people, communities, and organizations.
The Office of Field Education at UTRGV’s School of Social Work is in charge of the development and coordination of this component for both the BSW and MSSW programs. The Director of Field Education works closely with students, field instructors, and community agencies to generate opportunities that will result in enriched professional development for both students and field instructors and, ultimately, that will have a positive impact on the people receiving social work services.
