Tamara Al Rawwad, PhD, MPH

Dr. Tamara Al Rawwad joined us from the University of Houston, where she completed a 3-year Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in the College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Health Outcomes and Policy. She is the Director of the Expansion of Interprofessional Substance Use Disorders Education Project. Tamara has a PhD in Social Work from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, a Master’s in Public Health from the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Jordan School of Medicine, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Jordan School of Nursing. Her teaching and research interests include behavioral health (mental health and substance use) in diverse populations; prescription drug use (opioid); HIV/AIDS; and Interprofessional education, training, and service provision. Dr. Al Rawwad has more than 15 years of academic experience – both international and domestic. Her expertise includes quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research methodologies, particularly in community-based research, culturally-appropriate prevention interventions, and inter-professional collaborations.

Noelia Alonzo is currently a 3-year Full-Time Lecture-1 for the School of Social Work at UTRGV. She was born and raised in the RGV and grew up in a poverty-stricken area; referred to as Colonia’s. Her strong determination led her to earn an Associate Degree in Education [honors cum laude] Bachelors in Social Work [cum-laude], Masters of Science in Social Work with a Concentration in Direct practice with Latino Individuals, Families, and Groups from the University of Texas-Pan American [Magna cum laude-Phi Alpha Mu] and a certificate in Hypnosis. Her experience centers as a therapist in mental health, administration in school social work with at-risk youth, case management with foster care and adoption, and as an educator in the School of Social Work. As an enthusiast for higher education, she strives to motivate future students to develop a passion for Social Work and helps them define what problem they want to solve in the world.

Dr. Luis R. Alvarez-Hernandez is originally from Puerto Rico, where he started his studies in social work. He completed an MSW with a Clinical Concentration and a PhD in Social Work, both from the University of Georgia. Dr. Alvarez-Hernandez’s research focuses on the wellbeing of Latinx, LGBTQ+, and immigrant communities with a particular attention to the experiences of people living at the intersections of these identities. His teaching and research are informed by over 10 years of experience as a bilingual (English and Spanish) social worker in mental health and healthcare settings, and by critical and feminist theories. Dr. Alvarez-Hernandez teaches courses on direct micro practice with individuals, families, and groups.

Sonja Arredondo has a Master of Social Work degree from Our Lady of the Lake University. She spent 17 years in Protective Services and 16 years as a Medical Social Worker. She has 17 years of experience in supervision, development of policies and procedures, preparing and insuring compliance to accrediting standards and experienced in preparing and implementing departmental budgets. 49 years as a professional social worker. Joined the Faculty in 2006. Teaching preferences are Practice I-Micro Skills, Social Work in Healthcare, Social Work in Schools, Statistics, and Research. Sandra Campos, LMSW was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley. She graduated from the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) with her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work. Her employment experience consists of Texas Department of Family & Protective Services (CPS caseworker), Department of State Health Services (social worker/case management), and Texas Health & Human Services (long-term care/regulatory services). Currently, employed as PRN status in the weekend at Mission Regional Medical Center for two years to continue practicing in my social work profession. In 2019, she transitioned to UTRGV as a full-time Lecturer.

Enedina Enriquez has been working with the UTRGV School of Social Work for 9 years. She earned her doctorate in social work from USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work in 2021. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Texas State Board Approved Clinical Supervisor, and a Certified Grief Coach Therapist. She is a BSW and MSSW graduate of UTPA. Her specialized fields of study include hospice, palliative care, chronic & terminal illness, suicide, survivors of suicide loss, grief, loss, and bereavement. She has developed several CEU workshops in these areas for community professionals and psychoeducational workshops for families in the community.

Romeo Escobar, PhD, LCSW, ACSW

Romeo Escobar, PhD, LCSW, ACSW is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He started his career in academia as an Adjunct Professor in 2014 and in 2016, he was offered a position in the Tenure-Track program at the University. Prior to transitioning into academia, Dr. Escobar worked in both the private and public sector and held positions in leadership, administrative, management, and clinical. He has practiced social work for the past 48 years of which the last 33 years have been in the field of mental health working with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults in the areas of both mental health and alcohol/substance related disorders. He has a PhD in Organizational Leadership Studies and a Master’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and recognized as a Private Practitioner by the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners and is certified through the Academy of Certified Social Workers.

Catherine Faver, PhD, LMSW

Catherine Faver is a professor of social work at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). She holds an MSSW degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and a PhD in social work and sociology from the University of Michigan. She has held previous faculty appointments at the University of Texas Pan American (UTRGV’s legacy institution), the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas at Arlington. Dr. Leyla Feize is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, School of Social Work. She has taught many courses in both BSW and MSW levels including Generalist Social Work Practice I, Advanced Clinical Assessment, and Advanced Policy Analysis. She has conducted research in areas of cultural competence, self-awareness and mindfulness. Her research interests include social work education, minority mental health, Immigration and Autism/ADHD. She has more than 25 years of experience in the mental health profession arena and is currently licensed as a Clinical Social Worker and certified supervisor by the state of Texas. She is an editor of Journal of Mental Health and Social Behaviour. She is an active member of Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and National Association of Social Workers (NASW). John Gonzalez, PhD

John Gonzalez is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley in the School of Social Work. He received his B. A. in Psychology and Sociology and PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. He received his MSW from the School of Social Work at Texas State University-San Marcos.  He has 25 years of experience in the fields of substance abuse and gerontology. Dr. Gonzalez’s research focuses on understanding and improving service delivery of mental health services to Hispanics. He also authored and co-authored publications on older minorities and mental health services, older adult resilience. He is a co-author of “Narratives of Social and Economic Justice.” He typically teaches Social Work Research Methods, Statistics and Social Work Practice with Older Adults.

Dr. Nazanin Heydarian’s research expertise include (1) characterizing chronic disease disparities faced by disabled persons, (2) identifying social-cognitive and interpersonal barriers faced by disabled patients, and (3) identifying and developing disability-competent practices for health care providers. Her teaching approach emphasizes evidence-based principles of learning and memory and applies principles of universally designed learning. Furthermore, Dr. Heydarian serves the national Blind community in the capacity of associate editor of the Journal of Blindness Innovation and Research as well as member on the National Federation of the Blind’s interdisciplinary Research Advisory Council. She also serves on leadership in Diabetes behavioral health as Early Career Committee chair for the Society of Behavioral Medicine’s Diabetes Special Interest Group.

Lin Jiang, PhD

Dr. Lin (Helen) Jiang got her Ph.D. degree from the University of Denver, Graduate School of Social Work in Nov. 2016. She started her assistant professor position at UTRGV from fall 2017. Her research interest focuses on gerontology, such as depression, social isolation, online social support among older adults, and Alzheimer's' disease. Helen is the communication chair for the Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work (AGESW). Also, she is the co-chair of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) Asian and Asian-Pacific Islander Focused Research cluster. She has extensive experience doing research and developing specialized programs for multiple patient populations.

Dr. Denise A. Longoria has been a social worker for over 25 years. In addition to teaching social work for 20 years, she has also practiced clinical social work in a variety of settings. She obtained the MSSW degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1992 and a PhD in Education from Capella University in 2010. She has maintained a private practice throughout her teaching career where she sees individuals, couples and families for counseling. Hector X. Palacios has been teaching for the UTRGV School of Social Work since 2013. Has taught undergraduate and graduate courses both micro and macro courses. He has a BA in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and an MSW from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, TX. He is Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). His background is in mental health working with adolescents and adults, substance abuse, organizational management and administration, program development, and consulting and training. He spent 23 years of his life working for Tropical Texas Behavioral Health Center. His initial job with Tropical was a mental health technician aide and his final position with the organization was as the Operations Director. Prior to teaching full-time he owned and operated a solo private practice for 12 years.

Nelda M. Rodriguez, LMSW has been in Social Work since 1987. She received her BSW and MSSW from the University of Texas Pan American in 1986 (currently University of Texas Rio Grande Valley). Sandra Stark is currently the Title IV E Program Coordinator for the School of Social Work and is an instructor for the child welfare courses for this program. She earned a Bachelors in Social Work and a Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Texas Pan American. Her experience centers in the area of Child Welfare as she worked for Child Protective Services for 11 years. Her passion for raising awareness on child abuse and neglect has driven her to educate our students and community on the importance of advocating for our most vulnerable population. Luis R. Torres-Hostos, PhD

Luis R. Torres-Hostos, Ph.D., is Founding Dean and Professor of the School of Social Work at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, TX. He assumed his role on August 1st, 2020 and rapidly integrated into the university, local, and binational communities of the Rio Grande Valley, where he has positioned the School of Social Work to play a key role in promoting health, health equity, and social justice. In his first year, he led a strategic planning effort that will increase the number of faculty and researchers in the School; expand community-engaged research and scholarship in topics impacting the Rio Grande Valley communities; and strengthen educational initiatives, including expanding clinical preparation in the master's program, developing additional specializations, creating a bilingual master’s program, and building a doctoral program. Dr. Torres-Hostos’ research focuses on health disparities and social determinants of health with a focus on Hispanic and African American communities, and on community engagement initiatives aimed at building community resilience. He is currently leading a team of researchers, community partners, and students in an NIH-funded project titled Community Engagement Strategies for COVID-19 Prevention and Response in Underserved Communities in Hidalgo County, which is part of the Texas CEAL (Community-Engagement Research Alliance Against COVID-19 in Disproportionately Affected Communities) Consortium (see www.TexasCeal.org). Dr. Torres-Hostos’ research and community work have been funded by federal, state, and private entities. He has traveled and worked extensively in Latin America, and has established research collaborations in Mexico, Central America, and Puerto Rico. He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross South Texas Chapter and is a member of the Rotary Club of Mission. Originally from Puerto Rico, Dr. Torres-Hostos holds a doctorate in clinical psychology from Fordham University in New York City and has over 30 years of clinical, teaching, research, and administrative experience.

Susy Villegas was awarded her Ph.D. degree from The University of Texas at Arlington. She received a master’s in social work from the University of Kansas and obtained a post-graduate degree (2-year program plus a thesis) in clinical psychology from the University of Costa Rica, her native country. Her undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology was obtained at Hearst University in North Ontario, Canada. Dr. Villegas has also completed a two-year training specialization in Family and Marriage Therapy and a two-year post-graduate specialization course in Human Sexuality from the Menninger Foundation in Kansas. She is currently licensed by the state of Texas as a Clinical Social Worker.

Heather Vitek moved to the Valley in 2008 when her husband accepted a position of professor/ researcher in the biology department at UTRGV and she has been a Lecturer I in the UTRGV School of Social Work since 2016. She works in the Office of Field Education as the BSW Field Coordinator managing all aspects of preparing and supervising BSW students for their field practicums.
