What inspired you to become a doctor?
Having experienced life in a low-income neighborhood, I am intimately familiar with the challenges of poverty and the unequal access to healthcare that accompanies it. My motivation to pursue a career as a physician stems from the desire to help bridge the divide between patients and quality healthcare. Additionally, the notion of becoming a doctor holds meaningful significance within my family, as it is both distant and delicate. Consequently, the ability to positively impact my family's future has immense importance to me.
Why did you choose the UTRGV School of Medicine?
As a student at UTRGV, I vividly recall the time when the area was cleared to make way for the construction of the School of Medicine. Each day, as I drove past the construction site, a sense of pride and honor welled up within me, and I knew I wanted to be a part of this remarkable program. I aspired to become an exceptional physician for the people of the Valley – my fellow residents – trained right here in our community. Moreover, the school remained true to its mission, mainly through the AHEC [Area Health Education Centers] program, where I actively participate. This program dedicates its time and resources to significantly impacting the local communities and underserved areas where accessible healthcare is urgently needed. This crucial aspect was another significant factor influencing my decision to choose the UTRGV School of Medicine.
The UTRGV School of Medicine is a practicing academic medical institution. What aspect of academic medicine impacts you the most? (Educational, clinical, research, etc.)
As I progress into my fourth year of medical school, I realize that the most profound experiences I've had thus far have been in clinical settings. These opportunities to engage directly with patients have proven incredibly enriching and fulfilling. I genuinely relish the moments when I can connect with individuals from my community, engaging in meaningful conversations. Furthermore, a profound sense of satisfaction and pride fills me when patients recognize that I am actively training to serve and assist them in their healthcare journey.
What specialties of medicine or research interest you the most? Why?
This question is frequently asked, and I must admit I don't have a definitive answer yet. However, I know that I am inclined towards a specialty where I can make a significant difference in the lives of a larger number of patients. I truly appreciate the interaction with patients and their loved ones. I embrace the responsibility of supporting patients during their most vulnerable moments. Additionally, the prospect of potentially curing someone and transforming their life fills me with excitement and anticipation.
What is one interesting fact others might not know about you?
One noteworthy aspect about me as a medical student is that I follow an unconventional path. I was never the top-performing student, nor did I enroll in the most challenging courses. While this might not be considered a desirable trait, I believe it holds importance for others to hear. I hope those grappling with self-doubt about their suitability for medical school can take solace in my story. If you genuinely believe in yourself, it can make all the difference.
