Rio Grande Valley Summer Science Internship
The RGV Summer Science Internship program is getting ready to kick-off its thirteenth year! The RGV SSI program aims to provide current high school sophomores and juniors with the opportunity to obtain hands-on experiences in active university-based research projects and makes one-on-one career mentoring achievable by ensuring that students are matched with a science faculty member with whom they share similar interests. As part of the program students will work for 6 weeks with their mentor and are required to complete 20 hours of science related work per week. The program culminates with each student presenting his/her work to faculty, friends, family, and the community at large. Partners that make the RGV SSI program possible include the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, The University of Texas School of Public Health, Health Science Center at Houston Brownsville Regional Campus, and the Rio Grande Valley Science Association.
Things to know about the RGV Summer Science Internship
What is it?
The RGV Summer Science Internship gives students an opportunity to work side by side with faculty conducting research in a university setting. Internships are available at UTHealth School of Public Health in Brownsville, the UTRGV School of Medicine, and UTRGV Edinburg and Brownsville campuses.

Who Should Apply?
- Current high school sophomores and juniors living in the Rio Grande Valley
- Students interested in science
- Students whose parents have not completed a Bachelor's Degree from college or university
Application Requirements
- Complete the RGV Summer Science Internship online application
- A 350-word essay (to be submitted with your application)
- An online teacher/counselor reference form (completed and submitted by the student's teacher or counselor)
Application Deadline
The deadline to submit your application is May 11, 2019 by 11:59 p.m. Applications will be evaluated, interns will be selected and paired with mentors. Selected interns will be informed by telephone on the week of May 24, 2019.
Internship Dates
The internship runs from June 6, 2019 to July 18, 2019.
