Welcome from the Chair

Thank you for your interest in the Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Recently established as a new department at the UTRGV School of Medicine, we are a vibrant group actively engaged in educating the next generation of physicians in the principles of neurology, advancing discovery into diseases of the nervous system, and providing advanced clinical neurology care to our South Texas region.

We provide medical students exposure to Neurology throughout their training, starting with the Mind, Brain, and Behavior module in the foundational curriculum of the second year. This is followed by clerkships and selective rotations in the 3rd and 4th years, where our medical students may have the opportunity to rotate with excellent teachers in our community-based faculty. Our Graduate Medical Education (GME) mission is focused on the creation of an ACGME-accredited Adult Neurology Residency Training Program.

Our clinical mission is to address substantial neurological health disparities in the Rio Grande Valley by providing access to the highest quality, academic neurology care to a patient population with significant disparities and barriers to health care.

We believe commitment to advancing the health of the nervous system is essential as it relates to the overall health of the individual. By improving the prevention of neurological illness in the Rio Grande Valley, this will serve as an innovative step in creating healthy communities. Our program supports public policies that promote access to neurological care for all patients.

In research, we are committed to the advancement of treatments and processes that will benefit patients throughout the RGV and beyond. We support collaborative research efforts across other colleges and universities. We value and support bringing leading-edge research discoveries to the bedsides of our patients through our partners at the UTRGV Institute for Neuroscience and the Memory Disorders Center.

We look forward to welcoming you to our program as we continue to make history in advancing the neurological health needs of patients in the Rio Grande Valley.
