Obstetrics and Gynecology

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine. Our department is committed to improving the health of women in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond through our clinical, educational and research activities.

Our Department Vision:  To lead the transformation of women’s health

Our Department Mission: To innovate high quality patient centered care, promote collaborative research, create the next generation of exemplary women’s health care leaders, and transform the health care system through advocacy

Since our founding in 2015 our vision of transforming women’s health care in the Rio Grande Valley is rapidly being realized.  Our diverse, mission driven faculty and learners are leading clinical initiatives that have already significantly affected the overall health of our community.  We collaborated with Women’s Hospital at Renaissance to develop a Laborist service providing the only 24/7 in house L&D coverage in the Valley.  This has enabled us to offer routine TOLAC/VBAC and immediate postpartum LARC services that were previously unavailable in the entire region.  We are utilizing the UTRGV Mobile Van to provide contraceptive services to rural communities in locations across the Valley with plans to expand the number of sites and the services offered in the next year.  Finally, we have recruited the first fellowship trained Ob/Gyn FPRMS specialist and the first board certified Gynecologic Oncologist who are now providing services in the Valley. Previously patients traveled three or more hours to San Antonio or Houston for such subspecialty care.

We are creating the next leaders in women’s health with educational programs that balance a strong academic core with exceptional community experience.  We strive to provide our learners with the tools to be outstanding clinicians, researchers, teachers and advocates with a goal to provide all patients with state of the art care that is evidence based, cost effective and delivered in a culturally appropriate manner.

Our collaborative research endeavors focus on issues important to the region including increasing access to care, improving quality of care, and implementation of new services that were not previously available in the area.

We care deeply about community and look forward to furthering our vision of transforming women’s health in the Valley and beyond.  We are proud of our accomplishments thus far but are excited about the seemingly limitless opportunities that exist to better the health of women in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.
