UTRGV renews support for DACA students and employees

July 19, 2021

Dear UTRGV Family,

A federal judge in Texas on Friday ruled that Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is illegal and ordered the Biden administration to stop granting new applications.

The order will not affect current DACA recipients who have the two-year renewable work permits. The federal court ruling affects new applicants only.

While we are disappointed with the decision, which is being appealed by the federal government, we remain hopeful that Congress will act swiftly to provide a path for citizenship to Dreamers.

DACA students and employees at UTRGV are an integral part of our university community, and we will continue to support our undocumented and DACA students and employees. If you have any questions or need guidance, please email dreamer@utrgv.edu. In addition, the university has several support services available to help you:

  • DREAM Resource Center: This center was created in 2018 on both our Brownsville and Edinburg campuses to provide support services and resources in a safe space for our undocumented and DACA student members of our campus community.
  • DREAM Zone Advocates: Members of the UTRGV community (student, faculty, or staff) who have been trained to provide support, resource, and empowerment to undocumented and DACA members of our campus community.
  • UT Employee Assistance Program: The EAP offers a variety of services including counseling consultation services with a licensed mental health professional, legal and financial resources, and work-life referrals.
  • For students, the Student Life and Dean of Students office is there for you. Confidential support for personal issues or concerns is also available through the Counseling Center.

We are steadfast in being a community that is affirming and supportive, and are committed to providing access to services and support necessary to the success of our students.

Sincerely,

Guy Bailey
President

Rebecca Gadson
Dean of Students
