Message from the President: Sexual Misconduct & Discrimination

September 20, 2019

Dear UTRGV Students, Faculty, and Staff:

Texas recently enacted new legislation outlining new sexual misconduct reporting responsibilities for faculty and staff. These new responsibilities are explained in detail in the training module added on August 29th. If you have not done so already, please carefully review the new requirements; the deadline to complete the training is October 1st. Should you have any questions or wish to schedule a training for your student group, department or unit, I encourage you to contact Florence Nocar, Chief Equity & Diversity Officer and Title IX Coordinator. Florence oversees the Office of Institutional Equity & Diversity (OIED), which leads our efforts in promoting diversity, ensuring non-discrimination, and promoting a campus climate that understands sexual misconduct is wrong and will not be tolerated.

Should any faculty, staff, administrator or student have concerns related to discrimination or sexual misconduct, these concerns can be taken directly to OIED, www.utrgv.edu/equity.

We each have a role in upholding human dignity and ensuring the work and learning environment is conducive to individual excellence by directing our community members to appropriate wellness resources and services. Promoting diversity and equal opportunity, and ensuring non-discrimination, are fundamental to UTRGV’s commitment to excellence, and we must continue to work together to fulfill this important duty.

I encourage you to review UTRGV’s applicable policies:

  • ADM 03-100 Non-Discrimination and Complaint Procedure;
  • ADM 03-200 Accommodations for Individuals with Disabilities;
  • ADM 03-300 Sexual Misconduct;
  • ADM 03-400 Consensual Relationships;
  • ADM 04-301 Non-Retaliation.

Through the OIED website, www.utrgv.edu/equity, you can learn more about your rights, safety on campus, sexual misconduct, consent, retaliation, and available campus and community wellness resources, such as the Office for Victim Advocacy & Violence Prevention, a confidential UTRGV resource for students, faculty and staff.

Sincerely,

Guy Bailey
President
