Message from the President

November 6, 2018

Dear Campus Community:

As you may recall, UTRGV learned at the December 2017 SACSCOC Board meeting that while we had successfully addressed the items originally cited in the January 2017 notification letter, the SACSCOC Board wanted validation from an external auditor that issues cited in our FY 2016 audit had been fully addressed.

In accordance with SACSCOC policy, a Special Committee of our peers visited campus last month to review evidence of compliance with specific standards of the principle cited in the January 2017 notification letter. The results of the visit are very encouraging, and the visiting committee’s report may be obtained. Please keep in mind that the findings of this visiting committee represent a preliminary assessment of the institution at this time; final action on the report rests with the Commission on Colleges.

As we await a decision from the SACSCOC Board in December, please remember the following:

  • First and foremost, UTRGV remains accredited. Current and future students and faculty are not at risk; federal and state funding and student financial aid are not threatened; research grants and eligibility for additional grants are not threatened; and the quality of degrees granted in the past and in the future is not affected.
  • In addition, we have worked with all our program-specific accreditors to ensure accreditations (e.g., School of Medicine, Nursing, Business, Engineering, etc.) remain intact.
  • Lastly, there are no issues or concerns with the quality of UTRGV’s academic program offerings or degrees.

We prepared diligently for this visit and deeply appreciate the hard work and support of all of you throughout this year.

For more detailed updates, please visit our accreditation webpage. The website currently houses all official documentation, including official letters and reports that UTRGV has received from SACSCOC, other communication pieces, and FAQs. Thus, we encourage you not only to visit the page, but also to share it with students, faculty, staff, and other UTRGV stakeholders.

Guy Bailey
President
