Student Scholarships
The Political Science Department offers five scholarships to students pursuing a political science major or master’s degree. Special conditions apply to the Binder Scholarship, as explained below. The Political Science Department also offers the Hester Scholarship for students who participate in the summer Law School Preparation Institute. To apply for these scholarships, use the UTRGV scholarship application portal. The deadline for applications is February 1 for current students and is December 1 for high school seniors.
Glynn and Rene Morgan Scholarship in Political Science
Requirements: 3.25 GPA, Junior or Senior Status, full time enrollment
The Morgan Scholarship is designed to cover financial need for the awarded student(s) and is intended to renew for a second year.
The Mario Medrano, Jr. Political Science Scholarship
Requirements: 2.8 GPA, Junior or Senior Status, full time enrollment
Sister Carol Messina Scholarship
Requirements: 2.5 GPA, Undergraduate or Graduate students, full time enrollment, preference for female applicants
Joe Binder Scholarship for Students of Politics
Requirements: 2.5 GPA, Undergraduate or Graduate students, full time enrollment
Applicants for the Binder Scholarship must also submit a 1-3 page essay describing why they want to pursue a degree in political science.
Darrell B. Hester Scholarship
This scholarship is set aside for students interested in applying to law school, and is distributed through the summer Law School Preparation Institute (LSPI). More information about LSPI is available on the institute's webpage.
