Global Partnerships
Partnering with UTRGV
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, as a global university, actively seeks new and creative ways to partner with institutions abroad. UTRGV formalizes its strategic international partnerships through written agreements. International Agreements (commonly called a Memoranda of Understanding or MOU) are developed between UTRGV and an international university for a variety of purposes including research and resource sharing, study abroad programs (both faculty and non-faculty led), faculty and/or student exchanges, or other initiatives. MOUs serve as umbrella agreements for broad cooperation and may be accompanied by Program Agreements that detail specific activities to fall under the broad agreement. International agreements provide visible and concrete intentions of colleagues and/or academic units working together towards a common goal.
In certain cultures, a written statement of intent is highly valued or is deemed essential for obtaining government funding and/or enabling faculty members at the partner university to implement outlined activities. A written international agreement also provides existence of a linkage for the benefit of other UTRGV units. An agreement also may help to minimize misunderstandings in the future regarding the components of what was agreed. Please note that international agreements are required if legally binding commitments are made for units at UTRGV; contracts to which UTRGV is a party must be in writing.
Finally, it is important to note that no agreement may exceed a three (3) year duration. During the final year of the agreement’s validity the outcomes of the said agreements will be evaluated to determine whether to renew the agreement. Also, only the President or Provost of UTRGV may sign an agreement on behalf of UTRGV.
