Post-Master's Nurse Practitioner Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health


The Post-Master’s Nurse Practitioner Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing is designed as a specialty within graduate nursing education to include programming that will assist a student to acquire advanced knowledge and clinical skills to provide best practice and comprehensive care to clients across the lifespan. The coursework and practicum will focus on a range of mental health care needs of individuals and families whether in outpatient, inpatient or private practice settings. The foundation for advanced practice is focused on content included in core courses in physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapeutics, and health assessments.

On September 1, 2015, the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Certificate was launched with the inauguration of UTRGV.

Admission requirements:

To be admitted to the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner- Post Master’s Certificate Program, prospective candidates must first meet all requirements for graduate admission to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), as well as the other requirements listed below:

  1. Master of Science in Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner.
  2. Successful completion (grade B or higher) of graduate Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) level courses equivalent to UTRGV SON in Advanced Health Assessment (UTRGV SON-NURS 6305), Advanced Pharmacology (UTRGV SON-NURS 6306), and Advanced Pathophysiology (UTRGV SON-NURS 6304) from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredited program in nursing.
  3. A current unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in your state of residence.
  4. Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale in the earned graduate degree.
  5. Cleared Criminal Background Check
  6. Evidence of current immunizations required by the Texas Department of Health for students in health-related academic programs.
  7. Current Resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  8. 3 Letters of professional recommendation
  9. Personal statement/letter of intent
  10. A “live face-to-face “or “Virtual” Interview with the Graduate Admission, Progression and Graduation Committee
