COVID-19 Library Updates

Hours of Operation

The UTRGV Libraries will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on Saturday and Sunday beginning June 1st. Please check our hours page for more information.

When Visiting the Library

  • Face masks/coverings will be required to enter and use all library spaces.
  • Furniture and computer workstations have been adjusted for social distancing; for your safety, do not study in groups or move the furniture
  • Plexiglass is installed at the library service desks in Edinburg and Brownsville.
  • Please follow the floor markings designating six-foot distancing and stand behind the Plexiglas when approaching a service desk.
  • We are disinfecting the areas you use, so please adhere and follow the "Help Us Help You Stay Healthy" flyer guidelines posted on study carrels, tables, and computer workstations.
  • Some areas/rooms might be closed throughout the library building.

Practice Social Distancing

  • No groups of 10 or more
  • Maintain distance (6 feet)
  • Cover coughs / sneezes
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Wash hands for 20 seconds

Computer Labs

  • Computer labs will be available to provide internet and computer access to students who do not have access to a computer or internet service at home.
  • As part of the recommended social distancing protocols, every other computer station will be available to provide adequate distancing.
  • Computer lab cleaning practices will be enhanced and computer shared spaces will be wiped down to keep the surfaces clean.
  • Please wash your hands before and after using the computer lab.
  • Printing will be permitted, but only personnel will retrieve the printouts.

    • Additional MAC computers at VABL will be made available if needed

Access Services

Due to the ongoing nature of the situation, these policies are subject to change.

  • A no food policy is implemented, to support efforts toward a clean building and allow custodial services to focus in sanitizing the building.
  • To take care of you, study rooms are not available for online reservations.
  • Shelves are unavailable for browsing. For assistance text the Brownsville Campus at (956) 825-3578, and the Edinburg Campus at (956) 616-4231.

Interlibrary Loan:

  • Your request may be cancelled, and availability of items may be limited due to delivery or closures of other libraries. Please email us at for any questions.

Course Reserves:

  • Summer 2020: Please note that we are not currently accepting requests for print/physical reserves. Circulating items (books and media equipment) are not available at this time. We want to be mindful of avoiding cross-contamination and help prevent the spread of Covid-19.
  • Please submit your purchase request for an eBook recommendation via the Recommend a Purchase form.


  • Libraries have stopped loaning physical items (books and media equipment) until further notice to help minimize the spread of COVID-19. Books and physical items will not circulate at this time. Please visit our online resources to access library material.
  • We understand this is a special situation, so please help by not returning any Library items (books or media equipment) at this time.
  • All checked out library items will have automatic renewals and due dates will automatically be extended.
  • No late fines and student blocks will be assessed during this time period.

  • TexShare Card Program has been temporarily suspended due to COVID-19. Libraries are not currently issuing or renewing TexShare Cards.
  • Even though we are currently not checking out material at the moment, the library offers a vast amount of electronic resources and accessible online alternatives for your immediate use.

Collection Development

We will not be accepting donations to the Library for the time being.

Research and Instruction

  • Staff will be creating and uploading instructional videos onto the University Library Website.
  • Staff will be readily available to assist users through chat and email.
  • Users may also set up virtual meetings with R & I librarians by setting up appointments through the University Library website.

Several future plans for programming, outreach and research based instruction were canceled due to COVID 19. This programming included the following:

  • Faculty Write-In scheduled for, April 17th
  • Census 101 presentation scheduled for April 22nd and 23rd
  • Participation with the Research Faculty Training Program, Keys to Research, scheduled for March 26th and March 27th
  • The Spring Game Day, hosted by Carlton Nelson at the Edinburg Library, which was scheduled for March 21st

FDLP Updates

  • The Library is open for business, but due to certain circumstances, we are operating with limited hours, services, and staff. Access to physical items in our Federal Depository Library Collection will be limited to these hours.
  • Access to online government information is available as usual through our LibGuides page. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we will provide full access again as soon as possible.
  • In the meantime, you may contact the regional or nearby selectives for help with government information. Contact information for nearby libraries can be found in the Federal Depository Library Directory.
