Course Description

The Language Institute offers five (eight week) Intensive English programs year-round at the Edinburg campus.

There are 10 levels of ESL instruction from Basic to Advanced.

During the summer, a three-week Special Summer Program is available for students 15 years or older.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Students must be 18 years or older and have completed high school or equivalent
  • US Citizens or Resident Aliens should bring their birth certificate, resident alien card or employment authorization letter.
  • International Students must apply for F-1 visa.

SESSION TRANSFERS

  • Transfers to another session are Not Allowed without prior approval from the LI Director or Associate Director. If a transfer is approved, a Transfer Fee will be charged.

REFUNDS

  • Refunds require 4-6 weeks to process.
  • Intensive Program Processing fee of $100 is non-refundable.
  • Late fees are non-refundable.
  • Will only be given two weeks before the starting date of the program. No Exceptions!
  • If a student cannot be placed in an existing level or if a course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, a full refund will be given less a $100.00 processing fee.

MENINGITIS VACCINE

  • All new students under the age of 22 must submit evidence of receiving the meningitis vaccine or booster shot (administered within the past five years) or evidence of exemption before they can enroll. Students must provide proof of vaccination 10 days before the first day of the program

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

STUDENT VISA

  • The I-20 Form will be provided to eligible international students in order to apply for an F-1 visa at their nearest U.S. Consulate.

I-20 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Statement of account with sufficient funds to cover tuition, books, housing, and health insurance.
  • Copy of passport (must be valid for at least 6 months)

SEVIS FEE

  • The Department of Homeland Security requires all foreign students to pay a SEVIS fee of $350 (USD) either by mail or via Internet, and fill out a form I-901 before making an appointment at the American Consulate.

MEDICAL INSURANCE

  • The Board of Regents of The UT-System schools requires that all international students have medical insurance every session.  The Board of Regents has also granted an exception for Mexican Nationals attending the Language Institute.

  • Grammar
    • The LI teaches grammar as a foundation for communication.
  • Listening and Speaking
    • Conversation, discussion and structured listening practice help students gain confidence speaking and understanding English in everyday situations.
  • Reading and Writing
    • Students improve their ability to read and remember more, as well as learn how to write paragraphs and compositions.
  • Vocabulary and Idioms
    • The LI teaches students the words needed to communicate clearly. Learning idioms helps students express themselves naturally in English.
  • Academic Preparation
    • The High Advanced levels teach important test-taking strategies and language skills such as advanced grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking skills needed to succeed in an American university.
  • Language Laboratory
    • The LI offers a variety of audio and video recordings that help students practice and improve their listening skills. Students use the laboratory all week with their instructor.

  • Student Grade Report
    • At the end of each term, the LI sends all students a final evaluation of their performance in the program.
  • Certificates
    • At the end of each session, students who successfully complete the requirements of the LI receive a Certificate of Participation. Also, Students with Perfect Attendance receive a Certificate.
  • TOEFL
    • In order to gain admission to an American university, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required by most universities. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley offers the TOEFL test several times a year. For further information on taking the TOEFL please contact the University Testing Center at

    • Please note that students enrolled in the Intensive English program at the Language Institute who complete the highest upper Advanced Level, may request a TOEFL waiver to attend UTRGV.
